Of course, some of these treats don’t always make it to the full release of the game, and players have to go the extra mile of digging through the game’s code to come across them. Game modding, especially Assassin’s Creed modding, has always been a wonderfully enjoyable experience for the gaming community, as it allows players to use their imagination to create quirky things within their favorite games or even parse through the game’s code to make subtle improvements.

Redditor Captain_Lindemann is part of an Assassin’s Creed modding Discord, which is a community that works together to create and test different modifications for the game. In the post, they share information in the game’s code that points to dialogue about legendary ships that never made it into the full release of the game. This dialogue sheds more insight into the lore behind Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag’s legendary ships, including information about the “HMS Sovereign and HMS Conquest,” which probably became the HMS Royal Sovereign and HMS Fearless after the game’s full release. These two ships are “captained by siblings” whose families were wronged by pirates, and now they sail the seas, waiting for anyone who flies the black flag (pirates) to come and challenge them, hoping for vengeance, but as one part of the dialogue mentions: “Vengeance is a Noble motive, but Rage made them too wild.”
The dialogue also talks about the La Dama Negra, a ship that was meant to turn the tide in the war in Spain’s favor, but unfortunately, she was built too late for that to happen. She is a fortress in the water, which means she is slow – but Captain Kenway and the Jackdaw are very used to taking on forts in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag as well, so that isn’t a problem.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag’s naval gameplay is legendary, and many games, like Skull and Bones, are known to be emulating it or at least trying to build upon the game’s success with it. The four legendary ships in the game are located in the four corners of the map, waiting for players to sail all the way over to them and take on the fierce challenge of defeating them.
Overall, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is great, partly thanks to the modding community that is able to unearth gems like these pieces of dialogue in the game’s code.
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
