During Ubisoft’s E3 2016 press conference, the studio unveiled a new behind-the-scenes video for the Assassin’s Creed film. While the video features some basic talking head segments from director Justin Kurzel and star Michael Fassbender, there was also some intriguing snippets of new footage, some convincing 15th century era architecture, and some great shots of practical stunts. Given that Assassin Creed is supposedly mainly set in the present day, this new video suggests that when it comes to the 15th century parts of the film, the producers are going all out to replicate the franchise’s trademark acrobatics and stunts. It goes without saying that video game movies are generally terrible, and Assassin’s Creed will have a mountain to climb in order to shed that stigma. So far, the signs look promising as Ubisoft has retained some sort of creative control on the project, and the studio has stated that the movie will connect to the games and be part of the franchise’s sprawling universe rather than a simple standalone story.
With all of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed effort focused on just the film this year, as well as an all-star cast that includes Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson, there’s an expectation that the film will be better than most video game movies of late. But based on the first trailer and this new behind-the-scenes video, it looks like the movie is shaping up to be far better than the recently released - and negatively-received - Warcraft movie.
Assassin’s Creed will hit theaters on December 21st, 2016.
