Ashraf Ismail is the creative director for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. One of the through-lines for the Assassin’s Creed’s games is the idea that there is a modern-day protagonist that is living out these historic tales of their ancestors. Ismail was asked if this modern-day story was something that Valhalla would continue.

In both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Layla Hassan is the modern-day protagonist. One of the most important questions for Valhalla is if Layla’s story will be continuing. Ismail confirmed that not only is the modern-day setting staying put, but Layla will be returning as well.
Ismail pointed out that Ubisoft is working on surprising and unexpected content for players, which is certainly intriguing to hear. Some fans would rather hear that the modern-day aspect is ditched altogether, but perhaps the developer has worked hard at improving some of the modern-day aspects of the game. Valhalla has the opportunity to blaze its own trail in such a unique game setting and with a fresh start.
In the interview, Ismail also revealed the Viking protagonist in Valhalla, Eivor. Perhaps the surpassing and unexpected content is an even stronger link between Layla and Eivor. Fans have been speculating about the new Viking Assassin’s Creed game for so long, it’s thrilling to finally get concrete information.
Fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out more details about the game, as Valhalla will launch on next-gen consoles and current-gen consoles this holiday. Over the coming weeks and months it is likely that Ubisoft will share details, but how much impact Layla has on the game may only be found out upon playing Valhalla later this year.
