I learned this first-hand after making a trip over to Ubisoft’s Quebec City studio, where I was given four hours of hands-on time with the campaign for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Playing through Sequence 3 before jumping over to Sequence 7 of the game on PlayStation 4, I was given a good look at the new ways to get around the massive city of London, England, as well as a better understanding of the dynamic between newcomer, twin assassins Jacob and Evie Frye....

While these major titles drew no shortage of eyes to Ubisoft Forward, there were plenty of games that the company didn’t seem to have anything to say about. The three games left little room for upcoming games that players might have hoped to know more about by now, so here are some of Ubisoft’s notable works in progress that went unsung at the conference. Amidst several reports of sexual misconduct within multiple branches of the company, a slew of company executives stepped down from their positions within Ubisoft, including Creative Director of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Ashraf Ismail, who left his role in June. On Twitter, a fan asked Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Creative Director Ashraf Ismail if players would be able to visit Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument found in Wiltshire, England. Ismail said “oh, can you ever!” and added a GIF starring the man from the famous Old Spice advert nodding his head. It is thought that construction on Stonehenge began in 3000 BC and was completed in 1600 BC, meaning it was finished well before the first Vikings arrived in Britain in 793 AD....

The Dawn of Ragnarok expansion is indeed ambitious, bringing in a lot of mythological elements to tell a new story. It remains to be seen how much, or even if, this impacts Eivor or the modern-day story. Ubisoft’s new deep dive trailer for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla focuses on several key elements of the game: the settlement of Ravensthorpe, world exploration, Viking combat, major story themes of Eivor’s journey, and player choice. The video covers most of the core elements of the game, while giving brief glimpses of side activities and gameplay mechanics players can enjoy. Details are scarce concerning how this Assassin’s Creed co-op mode would work exactly, but it was compared to Ghost Recon Wildlands. This time around, co-op players would be taking on the role of Jora’s presumably Viking or Assassin allies during their journey, which, if pulled off right, would be impressive. The co-op mode for Wildlands is nothing to scoff at, but many may be wondering if a 4-player co-op mode should come back in Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok....

Assassin’s Creed Red will also explore Japan, and as the brief reveal trailer reveals, it will feature ninjas. The Assassin’s Creed series has always been good at exploring different historical periods, and its take on feudal Japan will likely be an enthralling one. Developers have only scratched the surface of Japan’s potential as an engaging location, and future titles from different gaming franchises should continue to explore it.
